My Bloody Valentine (Dir. George Mihalka)

The pinks and red of the Valentines decor go great with all the blood and guts of the later half of the movie.

This slasher is as Canadian as a hockey brawl.

When a small town decides to hold a Valentine's Day dance they invite the wrath of a killer wearing mining gear. Will the townsfolk survive this mysterious murderers killing spree? Find out in: My Bloody Valentine!

I grew up in a town very similar to the one in this movie (just replace the spooky mine with a paper mill) so this brought up some nostalgic feelings for me. In fact, this was filmed not too far from where I currently live and I loved how Canadian it all was.

While this is a pretty basic slasher, it differentiates itself with its location, cast (horny blue-collar workers instead of horny teens), and unique killer design. Top that with its well-executed scenes of gore and you have a memorable holiday slasher that stands above a lot of its contemporaries.

Bonus: Keith Knight, who plays the lovable Hollis is also the voice of Lowly Worm in The Busy World of Richard Scarry a Canadian kids TV classic.

Being drowned in hot-dog water is how many Canadians dream of going out.

Why you should watch:

  • You want to see a basic slasher premise that is unique where it counts.
  • You like well done gore and kill effects.
  • You want to see something very Canadian.
  • Fun holiday theme.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • You don't like slashers.
  • You don't like gore.
